Crystal Group and Conductive Composites Combine for Successful EMI Shielded Rugged Computers

Hiawatha, Iowa, USA – Crystal Group Inc., a trusted manufacturer of rugged commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) custom-developed computers, displays, switches, and storage devices today announced along with partner, Conductive Composite the successful development and testing of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielded RS378P Rugged 3U Carbon Fiber Server.

Electromagnetic waves generated by electronic devices may negatively affect other similar electronic devices.  This new server meets multiple shielding standards and will also be tested in an environment to simulate battlefield EMI conditions which the rack mounted server could encounter. Crystal Group and Conductive Composites teamed to provide an EMI shielded ruggedized server made of a light weight carbon fiber chassis with electromagnetic interference shielding.

“With growing reliance on electronic communications and a congested radio spectrum, engineers serving the defense and industrial markets are under pressure to provide systems that function reliably without causing electromagnetic interference or being susceptible to it,” said Crystal Group Business Development Manager, Charles Tristani.  “The initial electromagnetic carbon fiber server design testing validates our EMI materials reduction performance, which is an enabler for integrating additional carbon fiber servers into military environments.”

Conductive Composites’ EMI reduction carbon fiber is created by applying an ultra-thin nickel vapor deposition coating to carbon fiber, which is then then molded with resin into a super strong chassis and placed with other electromagnetic shielding components.

“Our goal as a world class supplier of unique multifunctional materials is to enable our partners to deliver innovative products to the market,” said Nate Hansen, President of Conductive Composites. “Traditional composites simply can’t provide the level of shielding that is possible by using our nickel vapor process, and metal approaches simply cannot match the strength to weight ratio offered by composites.”
