About MIL-STD-810 Method 512

Method 512 tests immersion with two procedures, immersion and fording. This method is different from an IP rating, which is a separate spec. However, there are some parallels between immersion protection, like IP67.

Method 512 tests immersion to, for example, one meter for 30 minutes to assess the box seals, connectorization and making sure there isn’t any leakage or damage in the system. It’s usually a temporary 30-minute test intended for equipment that might see some water damage.

The fording requirement, which is procedure two, addresses partial immersion as well as total immersion and the depths. This procedure is intended for equipment that will be mounted in something like an MRAP or Striker that will flood occasionally from fording through waterways.

Crystal Group’s SE16, which is rated to the immersion spec, can withstand sustained submersion in an environment for an extended period of time with no issues. We use the right connectors, sealing and gasketing necessary to keep water out of the system for full operation under those conditions.

The basic difference between the two procedures is the immersion testing intends to be for equipment that could be subjected to leakage or dripping, and the fording requirement is for material intended to be driven through or submerged for an extended period of time.
